About

This is a space where I explore how markets and politics shape everyday life.

I write about housing and land use, local politics and policy, the contours of civic life, and the broader questions that tie them together—mostly in Knoxville and East Tennessee, but with lessons that reach further. I try to be less definitive than curious: following the data where it leads, wrestling with hard questions, and arriving at conclusions that don’t fit neatly on either side of the aisle. At a time when public life feels increasingly polarized, I try to model something different—thoughtful, independent-minded inquiry, even when the topics are contentious.

Alongside political and economic commentary, you’ll occasionally find more personal essays—reflections on experiences that shape how I see the world. Those stories remind me that the personal and the political are never fully separate.

About Me

I’m Hancen Sale, a Knoxville, Tennessee–based writer and political commentator. My interests lie at the intersection of markets, policy, and politics. With experience at all three levels of government—local, state, and federal—my career has spanned housing, energy, and environmental policy: fields that, in different ways, shape how people live. Those experiences, and the people and places that shaped them, continue to inform much of what I write.
